Sabanagrande Scholars

communities in action

Created in partnership with Ecclesia Church in Houston, TX and Iglesia El Buen Pastor de Sabanagrande in Managua, Nicaragua, the purpose of this program is two fold. First, to enable Sabanagrande qualified scholars (based on need and academic merit) to attend College and/or technical/vocational schools and Secondary education institutions and at the same time encourage them to get involved in local community service to give back to their community. Secondly, “Sabanagrande Scholars” is an experiment in relationship-based sharing. We at Logos Communities strongly believe that the Christian scriptures call us to share the wealth we have with the less fortunate. Americans experience a standard of living far greater than the remaining two-thirds of the world’s population.

To be specific, in Isaiah chapter 58 God calls the nation of Israel (who was so busy being religious and ignoring the needs of those around them) to stop living an empty religion and to open their eyes to the need of their neighbors and start sharing what they had. The prophet writes in verse seven; “What I'm interested in seeing you do is: sharing your food with the hungry, inviting the homeless poor into your homes, putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad, being available to your own families.” (MSG)

Notice the choice of verbs in these phrases: SHARING your food, INVITING into your homes, PUTTING clothes on, and BEING available. To us this is a mandate that requires us not only to create programs where it is easy for us to separate ourselves from the people who are in need (I provide, you receive), but also to get involved in the lives of those in need. Sharing requires being together, inviting people in need into our homes; it requires us to open our lives to others. The act of putting clothes on someone involves touching and covering those who are exposed. Taking care of them and being available means giving priority to those in need in our families as well.

It is in this spirit that we invite people to choose a person to sponsor for school work in Nicaragua. We have posted a few profiles of different scholars that have applied to our program in the Community of Sabanagrande and want you to choose who you would like to share your resources, time, money, effort, encouragement, and perhaps a small part of your life as well.

In the Next page we have a list of all the scholars who have applied to the program with a few facts about them and what is required financially to sponsor them. Since Nicaragua has several Colleges and Universities with each specializing in different fields, the cost of attending school will vary for each individual. If you have any questions concerning the financial need of any of these students, please feel free to drop us a line to inquire about that. Most of our scholars do not speak English (unless otherwise noted in their bio) but if you want to communicate with them feel free to send us letters that we will be glad to translate into Spanish and send their way.
